History

The grand-niece of President James Harris Fairchild (1817-1902), Mrs. Amy Frances Fairchild Williams, together with her husband, contributed a substantial sum for a new women's dormitory for 80 women, Fairchild House. The residence hall stands on the site of the former Fairchild home and the Kellogg house, the home of President Fairchild's wife's family. Both Fairchild and the smaller Harkness House were originally built as residence halls for women, with dining for both men and women. They were built the same year, 1949, and were both designed by architect Eldredge Snyder. Located in the spacious basement of Fairchild are the Brown Bag and Fairchild Co-ops.
