History

In 1835, the Oberlin Collegiate Institute (former name of Oberlin College) erected a house for the use of its first president, Asa Mahan. The street upon which the Mahan and Finney houses were erected was given the name Professor Street for the first time. The Mahan House, a two story brick building, was occupied by President Mahan until his departure in 1850. That year it was purchased by Professor John Morgan (1802-84), and was used by him until 1881. It was purchased for the Conservatory of Music in 1881, and used for that purpose for two years, then torn down in 1883 to provide a site for a new Conservatory building, Warner Hall, where King Memorial Hall now stands.
