History

In October 2016 the Oberlin College Board of Trustees voted to approve the renovation and expansion of Philips Gym, to include a new health and wellness center and a complete renovation of Carr Pool. Construction began shortly afterwards on the south side of Philips Gym for the new fitness and wellness area, named after Patricia and Merrill Shanks. The new center houses areas for varying activities ranging from yoga, spinning, TRX, dance, and cardio and weight training. The Carr Pool was completely renovated and expanded from six to eight lanes. The center was built with the intent of bringing the campus community together by fostering healthy connections between body and mind. It opened in August 2018, and was dedicated during Homecoming Weekend, on October 6, 2018.
